Heartland: A Canadian Family Saga Continues

As Heartland enters its 17th season, the Fleming sisters continue to navigate life's ups and downs.

Heartland, Canada's longest-running hour-long drama, returns for a 17th season. Join the Fleming family as they celebrate 250 episodes of love, loss, and the enduring power of family.

When Heartland first aired in 2007, viewers were introduced to sisters Amy and Lou Fleming, who arrived at their grandfather's ranch in the fictional town of Hudson, Alberta, after the death of their mother. Amy was only 16 at the time. The show quickly captivated audiences with its heartwarming storylines, picturesque scenery, and exploration of family dynamics. Over the years, Heartland has followed the Fleming sisters as they have grown up, fallen in love, and started families of their own.

Season 17 opens with a poignant scene where Amy and Lou are cloud-watching, contemplating Amy's future. Michelle Morgan, who plays Lou, notes that she and Amber Marshall, who plays Amy, enjoy filming these quiet scenes together. Their real-life friendship has flourished over the years, making these on-screen moments feel genuine.

This season promises plenty of drama for both sisters. Lou will be dealing with professional calamities as she campaigns for re-election as mayor of Hudson. She's facing off against her friend and former co-worker, Rick Adderly, and must decide whether to fight dirty to win. Rick, who is the first LGBTQ+ character in Heartland's 17-year history, represents another way the show has expanded its universe to reflect changing social values.

Amy, meanwhile, will be focusing on moving forward with her life after the death of her husband, Ty. This will involve branching out, exploring new possibilities, and perhaps even dating again.

One of the key reasons for Heartland's enduring appeal is its ability to grow and evolve alongside its audience. The show has skillfully introduced new characters and storylines while staying true to its core values of family, love, and hope. Season 17 sees Lou's daughter, Katie, coming of age. Baye McPherson, who has played Katie since Season 15, is now roughly the same age as Amy was in the first season. This generational shift allows Heartland to connect with new viewers while continuing to resonate with long-time fans.

While the cast has remained remarkably consistent over the years, there have been some departures.9 Georgie, played by Alisha Newton, will not be in Season 17. However, fan favourite Mallory, played by Jessica Amlee, will return.

As Heartland celebrates its 250th episode, the question arises: how much longer will the saga continue? Both Morgan and Marshall believe that the show has more stories to tell but acknowledge that they have thought about how Heartland might eventually conclude. For now, fans can look forward to another season filled with the warmth, humour, and drama that have made Heartland a beloved Canadian institution.

Season 17 of Heartland premieres on October 1st on CBC.
