When Heartland first aired in 2007, viewers were introduced to sisters Amy and Lou Fleming, who arrived at their grandfather's ranch in the fictional town of Hudson, Alberta, after the death of their mother. Amy was only 16 at the time. The show quickly captivated audiences with its heartwarming storylines, picturesque scenery, and exploration of family dynamics. Over the years, Heartland has followed the Fleming sisters as they have grown up, fallen in love, and started families of their own.

Season 17 opens with a poignant scene where Amy and Lou are cloud-watching, contemplating Amy's future. Michelle Morgan, who plays Lou, notes that she and Amber Marshall, who plays Amy, enjoy filming these quiet scenes together. Baye McPherson, who has played Katie since Season 15, is now roughly the same age as Amy was in the first season. While the cast has remained remarkably consistent over the years, there have been some departures.9 Georgie, played by Alisha Newton, will not be in Season 17. However, fan favourite Mallory, played by Jessica Amlee, will return.
